A Guide to Electropolishing  | Limat | 31.12.08

Electrochemical metal polishing, better known as "electropolishing," is a microscopic polishing process applied to stainless steel. This kind of metal polishing creates the smoothest possible surface and has significant advantages over more traditional methods of metal polishing.

The chrome-like finish deriving from the electropolishing process has more than a mere esthetic effect, although it is one of the process' most notable advantages; electropolished metal surfaces are easier to clean and are more corrosion-resistant than surfaces polished either chemically or manually.

Electrochemical metal polishing rids surfaces from grease, iron, sand and bacterial residues. The process entails several stages, including removing grease and other residues, removing oxides, cleaning the welding and the polishing itself. The metal surfaces are rinsed between each stage, in order to ensure the best possible results.

Electropolishing is not a new invention, as the method has been available in the market for years. Nevertheless, new advantages to the process are constantly revealed, and it appears more will be revealed in the future.

Many industries have already realized that electrochemical metal polishing can give them a necessary edge they on their competitors, as the process yields smooth, shiny, extra-durable surfaces.

A comprehensive user's guide to electropolishing is an excellent tool for those already familiar with the advantages of electrochemical metal polishing, who wish to learn more; as well as for those familiarizing themselves with the process for the first time, who wish to fully understand its advantages.

A user's guide has recently become available online, putting together much of what has been written about electrochemical metal polishing in books, newspapers, trade publications and user manuals. This guide offers answers to some of the industry's core questions and is a great tool for engineers, designers and the industry in general, as part of the effort to extend the use of electrochemical metal polishing to a wider range of applications.
